Cookwear can influence health

(NaturalNews) Nearly every American consumer is acquainted with the advantages of nonstick cookware. However two generations later we're learning that this convenience may carry a heavy price tag in terms of health. Recent findings show that 95% of Americans have detectable levels of a plastic material, polytetrafluoroethylene (PFTE) used to coat non-stick cookware, in their blood. Though the application technology has improved over the years the essential ingredient is still there. Also an unknown number of human illnesses are linked to toxic particles and gases emitted when non-stick surfaces break apart. Its safety has been questioned to the extent that a non profit research organization, the Environmental Working Group (EWG), petitioned the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to warn the public of these safety concerns.

Low fat cooking necessitates nonstick cookware, but at what price? The Environmental Protection Agency says that ingesting small flakes of non-stick coatings is not known to cause any health maladies. One company making non-stick cookware has stated for the past 50 years that their non-stick coatings are safe. They further state there are no hazardous chemicals emitted if cookware is used responsibly keeping temperatures below 600 degrees Fahrenheit. Albeit a class-action suit filed by several states claims toxins are released under normal cooking use and that the company did not warn consumers about its dangers.

Another standby in almost every kitchen in America has been glass baking dishes. They were made with borosilicate glass but eventually the technology was sold along with the logo. Since then, there has been a ground swell of controversy with disturbing reports that the newer dishes often explode and shatter in the oven. A spokesman for the new manufacturer says the claims are unsubstantiated and the malfunctioning dishes are another brand even though the original logo is clearly displayed.

Stainless steel pots and pans, along with iron and stone cookware, are durable; the drawback with these is the need for more cooking oils so the food doesn't stick to the pan. This not only adds calories, but when oils are overheated they turn to unhealthy trans fats. New York Times science reporter Gina Kolata says: "The National Academy of Sciences, Department of Health and Human Services, National Heart Lung and Blood Institute and the Food and Drug Administration have all concluded: Trans fats are like butter or lard, -both increase cholesterol levels.

Ceramic, glass or enamel coated cookware can be safely heated to high temperatures, but at that point food enzymes and nutrients are destroyed. The health concern here comes from minor components such as pigments, lead, or cadmium. If the enamel coating has been scratched, these harmful materials to the body may leach into food.

Cookware made of aluminum conducts heat easily but has been associated with Alzheimer`s disease, though there is no proven link. Studies have shown aluminum alone leaches out into food during cooking, but we're told not to worry. Assured by the World Health Organization, we are safe if we consume no more than 50 milligrams daily.

Some of the healthiest cookware appears to be waterless, greaseless cookware made from surgical stainless steel. Most vegetables contain 90% water so cooking without adding oil, butter, fats or water preserves the minerals and natural salts. Made in the USA, the cookware creates a vapor seal and works like a small oven. Food is cooked at a low temperature for a minimal amount of time - the best way if you are cooking, to preserve minerals, vitamins and valuable nutrients.

Knock out the cold with sodium bicarbonate

Knock Out The Cold & Flu With Sodium Bicarbonate

Mark Sircus Ac., OMD
http://sodiumbicarbonate.imva.info
November 27, 2009

Though we know by now that sodium bicarbonate is a most useful medicine for the treatment of cancer and kidney disease and have always known its good for stomach acid imbalances and for cleaning our pools and refrigerators it is not likely we have thought about it to help resolve our common colds nor to alleviate they symptoms and dangers of influenza. Medicine does not have to be complicated and mysterious nor do we have to lay still and be run over by the Hun Hordes of Influenza viruses that the health authorities want us to be so frightened of.

Dr. Volney S. Cheney reported[1] long ago that, “A number of cases of colds of varying severity were carefully studied in the laboratory. Observation was made as to the degree of acidity of the urine; the CO2, combining power of the blood as an indicator of the alkaline reserve; tests were also made to determine the calcium content of the blood, the sugar content; non-protein nitrogen and the basal metabolism. The urine invariably carried a higher degree of acidity than the normal-in some cases as high as 800 (normal 350); the CO2 combining power of the blood in all cases was low, the highest being 52 per cent; the sugar content of the blood was generally decreased (below 100 mg. per 100 c.c.); the metabolic rate was always on the minus side. (These cases were carefully selected because of their lack of any symptoms of disturbed thyroid activity.) There is a change in the blood chemistry and, consequently, there must be a change in the tissues supplied by the blood. There is a decrease in the bicarbonates or reserve bases contained in the blood plasma and the tissues. These findings seem to point the way to the conclusion that a cold is a disturbance of the alkaline balance or reserve, in other words, a mild acidosis, or perhaps better stated, a lessening of the “buffer” action of the blood plasma through a decrease in its bicarbonate content.”

After doing his experiments, Dr. Cheney reported: “I have been able to induce all the symptoms of a cold, in varying degree from a simple coryza to that of la grippe and the “flu,” by the induction of an artificial acidosis through the administration of ammonium and calcium chlorides. The degree of severity of the symptoms was in direct ratio to the degree of acidosis induced. In the severer degree of acidosis, all the classical symptoms of the “flu” were present, even including a low degree of fever. The symptoms rapidly subsided upon the administration of sodium bicarbonate in large doses by mouth and by rectum.

Let’s talk about your refrigerator. Go home, unplug your refrigerator, and find out what happens. Now remember that before you unplugged that fridge there was no mold, no bad bacteria, and no bugs. By pulling the plug you change the environment. Watch what happens. Your food will start to break down through fermentation and then putrefaction. Things start growing and crawling around. Where did they come from? You know that they didn’t sneak in. The door was closed. They were always there. It is just that they have gone through metamorphosis and they have changed due to an environmental shift – in other words “a drop in pH”.

Dr. Cheney further reported his “abortive treatment” of any cold or flu thusly:

If the disease is attacked when there is a beginning dryness in the pharynx or a slight corzya, or congestion of the mucous membrane of the nose, and alkalinization is instituted by large doses of sodium bicarbonate, until the urine is alkaline to litmus paper, a “cold” can always be aborted. Along with the sodium bicarbonate which I generally prescribe in 6 g. doses, accompanied by a large glass of hot water, every 2 hours for 3 doses, I give to an adult 1 g. of calcidin (a calcium and iodine combination) every half hour until 6 doses have been taken.

Most colds begin to manifest themselves late in the afternoon or early evening and the abortive treatment is best given at this time up to retiring. At the time of taking the treatment, the usual meal should be dispensed with, or should consist of milk and some cereal, or soup or broth. If the bowels are constipated, they should not be moved by a cathartic or laxative but the lower bowels should be relieved by a soap suds enema. This treatment will abort colds, if taken in their incipiency.

Where a cold has advanced to the stage where there is hoarseness and a profuse coryza, or where this condition has advanced to what we generally term “a cold,” I use the following treatment:

Initial dose 6 g. of sodium bicarbonate and 1 g. of calcidin, then 3 g. of sodium bicarbonate and 1 g. of calcidin every 2 hours for 6 doses, then 20 g. of sodium bicarbonate with /3 g. of calcidin every 3 hours during the waking period until the cold is checked.

The administration of the sodium bicarbonate should always be in or followed by a large glass of hot water. Locally, spray the nose and throat with a 1 to 5000 solution of metaphen, or other alkaline solution (1 dram of sodium bicarbonate to one pint of water) morning and night. If the bowels are constipated, I prescribe no laxative or cathartic but use an enema of soap suds to relieve the lower bowels.

Prophylaxis is best maintained by exercise and a diet which is well balanced and thoroughly adapted to the individual’s physical activities.

When the cold or ‘flu germs enter your body they immediately lodge themselves in the membranes of your nose. Your immune system then resists them by releasing inflammatory mediators. These in turn cause excessive mucus gland secretion, which blocks the sinuses, leading to a runny nose and all the other unpleasant symptoms of a cold or the ‘flu.

Dr. Hana’s Nasopure® Nasal Wash System transforms the ancient technique of nasal irrigation into the most effective, convenient and inexpensive nose washing system available today. It is a modern day netti pot. It quickly and safely washes away pollen, mold, dust, bacteria, viruses and mucus— the primary causes of nasal and sinus allergies, infection and discomfort. The Nasopure sinus cleansing salt mixture contains pharmaceutical grade sodium chloride (salt) and sodium bicarbonate.

Do not add regular table salt to any solution used for nasal washing as it contains undesirable additives and throws off the saline concentration of the solution. Salt is both soothing and therapeutic (in the proper concentration). Too little or too much salt will cause the water to “burn” or irritate your nasal passages and sinuses. Pickling salt, which is usually pure salt, is preferable to regular table salt if making your own salt solution.[2]

For a 0.9% isotonic saline solution, the amount normally found in bodily fluids, use 1/3 teaspoon (approx. ¼ heaping teaspoon, or 1.85 ml) of salt. Anything less than this is hypotonic, anything greater is hypertonic. Some research suggests a hypertonic solution may be best when combating a runny nose (as it would have a drying effect), so you might want to go to the higher end of the salt range. Add baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to help buffer the solution. A hypotonic solution, however, would tend to be moisturizing (i.e. the lower end of the salt range), and may be what you want in a nasal spray for general prophylactic use.

If you want to take direct action against the virus or germs that are already attacking you, the battleground is inside your nose. Directions for common use of nasal washings include; pour a little warm water into a dish and add a level teaspoon of your sodium bicarbonate. Stir it well and then immerse your nose and surrounding parts of your face into it. Slowly breathe the water up your nose until it reaches the point where it begins to overflow into your mouth. Then expel it and rinse your mouth out. Be careful not to add more than a teaspoonful to the water, and that the dish is of a size that enables you to fit your face into. If the mixture is too strong it will sting your nose for a while. A little trial and error will tell you how warm the water should be, which is warm enough but not hot. Do this three times a day, and it should ward off even the heaviest of colds well ahead of time.

Garlic nose drops. In his book The Healing Power of Garlic Paul Bergner writes: “Garlic nose drops directly kill the viruses that cause cold or flu.” He also writes about a study with mice where some were inoculated with garlic, and some were not. The flu virus was introduced to the nasal passages of each mouse. Those mice that received the garlic remained healthy, where all the others got sick. To make nose drops, Bergner instructs us to crush some garlic to obtain juice, and add ten parts water and mix well. Eating garlic will also have a systemic effect, but deodorized garlic tablets or capsules reportedly do not work near as well.

Hydrogen Peroxide: Another method is to fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water. Tilt your head back and spray it into your nostrils. It will bubble up and help to kill the bacteria in your nose. Hold for a few minutes and then blow your nose into a tissue. One can also use hydrogen peroxide in a vaporizer as well.

If an individual co-operates in a cleansing process of Nature by performing enemas, nasal washes and gives rest to his digestive system by observing a modified fast at the very beginning of cold or flu they will reduce the severity and length of their suffering and with a little luck get rid of the problem within 48 hours. During a fast, half lemon juice mixed with a glass of warm water may be taken several times a day. One or two spoons of honey may be added to this if desired. Not only does this help with the elimination process but it directs internal energies to healing instead of digesting and assimilating new food.

Zinc gluconate lozenges reduced the average
duration of common colds with exceptionally strong
statistical significance when taken in the first few hours.

Because most people don’t understand what detoxification symptoms are, they head to a drug-oriented doctor, who also doesn’t understand detoxification symptoms. The doctor confirms that they are sick, and then puts them on some sort of drug that is designed to stop the symptoms and this short circuits the detox dump and actually prolongs suffering. A real doctor will look at what is really going on and treat the problem on a fundamental level with medicinals that do not interfere with the natural process going on. According to recent studies use of over-the-counter cold and flu medicines at any stage of the illness only act to make it worse by prolonging the disease[3] and drugs like Tamiflu have their own dangerous toxicity that in certain cases is life threatening.

[2] Note: “Neti pot salt” (or “aromatic salt”) is just a marketing gimmick to sell salt at a higher price. It usually has some essential oils added, which might have some therapeutic value, or which some people may find pleasing. However it should be viewed as a luxury at a premium price, with relatively little practical value. Use it if you wish, but pickling salt is usually just as pure and free of additives, is widely available, and generally inexpensive.

Safe, natural methods to a healthy and clean hair

(NaturalNews) Aromatherapy oil combinations and simple homemade herbal hair packs can provide gentle, non-harmful ways of moisturizing and repairing damaged hair. Regular use of over-the-counter shampoos and conditioners laden with toxic chemicals can dry and strip hair. Instead, try these easy home-made treatments to help revive, shine and clean hair in the best way possible, the natural way.

Hair Products to Avoid

Hair will certainly be stripped and damaged with the continual use of detergent type shampoos. Look out for shampoos containing Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS). This chemical is a skin, lung, and eye irritant, is suspected to cause cancer and damages hair follicles, according to the Journal of the American College of Toxicology.

Aromatherapy treatment for dry hair is simply a matter of adding essential oils of choice to a base oil appropriate for dry hair, such as coconut oil, almond oil, avocado oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil or olive oil.

Some of the best essential oils to choose from for dry hair are Lavender, Rosemary, Rosewood, Geranium or Sandalwood.

Aromatherapy Recipe for Damaged Hair

1 teaspoon Sesame oil
1 tablespoon Sweet Almond oil
1 tablespoon Peach Kernel oil
Half teaspoon Avocado oil
Half teaspoon Evening Primrose or Borage oil
2 drops Carrot essential oil
3 drops Geranium essential oil

Apply to hair and allow to soak into the hair, for 20 minutes or so.

Home-Made Shampoo for Dry Hair with Chamomile

Place 5 tablespoons of chamomile flowers in a bowl and add 4 cups of boiling water. Allow to steep, covered, for half an hour. Strain the liquid and add 4 ounces of Castile soap flakes. Shake the bottle and use this as shampoo. Used continuously, hair should eventually lose its dryness.

Hot Oil Treatment Recipe for Frizzy, Dry Hair

Apply warm olive oil or coconut oil all over hair. Massage into the scalp. Cover the head with a warm towel and leave for 20 min. Then take a bath and wash hair with a gentle, natural shampoo.

Hair Pack for Damaged Hair

Mash a ripe banana with a few drops of almond oil and massage into hair. Leave it for about 15 minutes. Rinse with water and shampoo in the usual way.

Recipe for Soft, Silky Hair

Mix 3 tablespoons of olive oil with 2 tablespoons of honey, massage into hair. Wrap the hair with a towel or shower cap and let it rest for 15 minutes. Shampoo and rinse the hair.

Tips on Treatment for Damaged Hair

Even if a good, healthy diet is being followed, avoiding the following practices will result in hair that is less dry and damaged and easier to manage:

Avoid central heating, overly hot water in baths or showers, over-washing of hair, rough towel drying, hot rollers and the use of harsh dyes and shampoos.

Stay away from hair styling products like gels, hair sprays, colorants and so on which have a damaging effect on hair. Perming, blow drying, straightening or curling hair can cause dryness.

Black strap molasses- EXCELLENT !

Health Benefits

Blackstrap molasses is a sweetener that is actually good for you. Unlike refined white sugar and corn syrup, which are stripped of virtually all nutrients except simple carbohydrates, or artificial sweeteners like saccharine or aspartame, which not only provide no useful nutrients but have been shown to cause health problems in sensitive individuals, blackstrap molasses is a healthful sweetener that contains significant amounts of a variety of minerals that promote your health.

Iron for Energy

In addition to providing quickly assimilated carbohydrates, blackstrap molasses can increase your energy by helping to replenish your iron stores. Blackstrap molasses is a very good source of iron. Particularly for menstruating women, who are more at risk for iron deficiency, boosting iron stores with blackstrap molasses is a good idea--especially because, in comparison to red meat, a well known source of iron, blackstrap molasses provides more iron for less calories and is totally fat-free. Iron is an integral component of hemoglobin, which transports oxygen from the lungs to all body cells, and is also part of key enzyme systems for energy production and metabolism. And, if you're pregnant or lactating, your needs for iron increase. Growing children and adolescents also have increased needs for iron. Just 2 teaspoons of blackstrap molasses will sweetly provide you with 13.3% of the daily recommended value for iron.

A Spoonful of Molasses Helps Your Calcium Needs Go Down

Blackstrap molasses is a very good source of calcium. Calcium, one of the most important minerals in the body, is involved in a variety of physiological activities essential to life, including the ability of the heart and other muscles to contract, blood clotting, the conduction of nerve impulses to and from the brain, regulation of enzyme activity, and cell membrane function. Calcium is needed to form and maintain strong bones and teeth during youth and adolescence, and to help prevent the loss of bone that can occur during menopause and as a result of rheumatoid arthritis. Calcium binds to and removes toxins from the colon, thus reducing the risk of colon cancer, and because it is involved in nerve conduction, may help prevent migraine attacks. Two teaspoons of blackstrap molasses will meet 11.8% of your daily needs for calcium.

An Energizing Mineral-Dense Sweetener

Molasses is also an excellent source of copper and manganese and a very good source of potassium, and magnesium.

Copper, an essential component of many enzymes, plays a role in a wide range of physiological processes including iron utilization, elimination of free radicals, development of bone and connective tissue, and the production of the skin and hair pigment called melanin. Numerous health problems can develop when copper intake is inadequate, including iron deficiency anemia, ruptured blood vessels, osteoporosis, joint problems such as rheumatoid arthritis, brain disturbances, elevated LDL (bad) cholesterol and reduced HDL (good) cholesterol levels, irregular heartbeat, and increased susceptibility to infections. Using two teaspoons of blackstrap molasses to sweeten your morning cereal and the coffee or tea you drink during the day will supply you with 14.0% of the daily recommended value for copper.

That same amount of blackstrap molasses will also provide you with 18.0% of the day's needs for manganese. This trace mineral helps produce energy from protein and carbohydrates, and is involved in the synthesis of fatty acids that are important for a healthy nervous system and in the production of cholesterol that is used by the body to produce sex hormones. Manganese is also a critical component of an important antioxidant enzyme called superoxide dismutase. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is found exclusively inside the body's mitochondria (the oxygen-based energy factories inside most of our cells) where it provides protection against damage from the free radicals produced during energy production.

Like calcium, potassium plays an important role in muscle contraction and nerve transmission. When potassium is deficient in the diet, activity of both muscles and nerves can become compromised. Potassium is an especially important mineral for atheletes since it is involved in carbohydrate storage for use by muscles as fuel and is also important in maintaining the body’s proper electrolyte and acid-base (pH) balance. When potassium levels drop too low, muscles get weak, and athletes tire more easily during exercise, as potassium deficiency causes a decrease in glycogen (the fuel used by exercising muscles) storage. Simply by adding two teaspoons of blackstrap molasses to your morning smoothie, you can supply 9.7% of your potassium needs for the day along with a healthy dose of carbohydrates to burn.

Calcium's balancing major mineral, magnesium is also necessary for healthy bones and energy production. About two-thirds of the magnesium in the human body is found in our bones. Some helps give bones their physical structure, while the rest is found on the surface of the bone where it is stored for the body to draw upon as needed. Magnesium, by balancing calcium, helps regulate nerve and muscle tone. In many nerve cells, magnesium serves as Nature's own calcium channel blocker, preventing calcium from rushing into the nerve cell and activating the nerve. By blocking calcium's entry, magnesium keeps our nerves (and the blood vessels and muscles they ennervate) relaxed. If our diet provides us with too little magnesium, however, calcium can gain free entry, and the nerve cell can become overactivated, sending too many messages and causing excessive contraction. Insufficient magnesium can thus contribute to high blood pressure, muscle spasms (including spasms of the heart muscle or the spasms of the airways symptomatic of asthma), and migraine headaches, as well as muscle cramps, tension, soreness and fatigue. In two teaspoons of blackstrap molasses, you will receive 7.3% of the daily value for magnesium.

Switching from nutrient-poor sweeteners like white sugar or corn syrup, or from potentially harmful fake sweeteners like aspartame or saccharin to nutrient-dense blackstrap molasses is one simple way that eating healthy can sweeten your life.

Description

The truth behind the phrase “slow as molasses” becomes apparent when you reflect on molasses’s thick, viscous, syrupy texture. Featuring a robust bittersweet flavor, blackstrap molasses helps create the distinctive taste of dishes such as baked beans and gingerbread. Blackstrap molasses is very dark in color, having a black-brown hue.

Blackstrap molasses is just one type of molasses, the dark liquid that is the byproduct of the process of refining sugar cane into table sugar. Blackstrap molasses is made from the third boiling of the sugar syrup and is therefore the concentrated byproduct left over after the sugar’s sucrose has been crystallized.

History

Molasses has been imported into the United States from the Caribbean Islands since the time of the early colonists. In fact, it was the most popular sweetener used until the late 19th century since it was much more affordable than refined sugar, which was very expensive at that time.

In some respects, molasses has had a rather sticky history with at least two important historical events centering around this sweet food product. The first is the Molasses Act of 1733, a tariff passed by England to try to discourage the colonists from trading with areas of the West Indies that were not under British rule. This legislation is thought to be one of the events that catalyzed pre-revolutionary colonial dissent and unrest.

It is not often that a fateful tragedy occurs that centers around a food, but unfortunately, in 1919, one such event did occur. The event is referred to as the Great Molasses Flood and occurred when a molasses storage tank holding over two million gallons of molasses broke, and its sticky content came pouring throughout the city streets of Boston, Massachussetts, traveling as fast as 35 miles per hour and creating a thirty foot tidal wave of sweetener. Unfortunately, this was not a sweet matter as twenty-one people died and significant amounts of property was destroyed.

Blackstrap molasses gained in popularity in the mid-20th century with the advent of the health food movement. Today, the largest producers of molasses are India, Brazil, Taiwan, Thailand, the Phillipines and the United States.

How to Select and Store

Look for blackstrap molasses that is unsulphured since not only does it not contain this processing chemical to which some people are sensitive, but it has a cleaner and more clarified taste. Blackstrap molasses made from organic sugar cane is also available in some markets.

Molasses should be stored in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator or a cool, dry place. Unopened containers should keep for about one year, while opened containers should keep for about six months.

"Desire drug" for women?!!!

Desire Drug May Prove Sex Really Is All in Her Head

By Naomi Kresge
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=206...id=a1dWw6lHCAJQ

Nov. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH is banking on sex really being all in women’s heads.

The German drugmaker is putting the finishing touches on a pill designed to reawaken desire by blunting female inhibitions. Unlike Viagra, which targets the mechanics of sex by boosting blood flow to the penis, this drug works on the brain.

The desire drug, the focus of a meeting on sexual disorders in Lyon next week, has the potential to revolutionize sexual medicine much as Pfizer Inc.’s blue pill did a decade ago. That could put family-owned Boehringer at the center of a debate about whether the medicine is a chemical shortcut around a complex dysfunction involving body and mind -- or whether disinterest in sex is a legitimate medical condition.

“This drug has the potential to finally open the door to acceptance of the idea that decreased desire can be something that involves a dysfunctional way the brain works, and not only a bad partner,” said Jim Pfaus, a neurologist at Concordia University in Montreal, who conducted early tests of the drug in rats. “Of course it’s in your head.”

The U.S. market for medicines to rekindle female libido could be bigger than the $2 billion a year in U.S. sales for erectile dysfunction treatments because more women report sexual problems, BioSante Pharmaceuticals Inc. Chief Executive Officer Stephen Simes estimated last year.

Showing It Works

Boehringer, based in the German town of Ingelheim on the Rhine’s west bank, was searching for a depression treatment in the 1990s when it stumbled on the compound, called flibanserin. By 2002, Boehringer found the drug wasn’t lifting patients’ mood. The company says researchers were startled when test subjects rated one measure of well-being, sexual appetite, consistently higher than the others.

After what Pfaus described as an initial period of hesitation about developing a sex pill, Boehringer decided to move forward. The company needs new drugs because it faces the loss of 1 billion euros ($1.5 billion) in annual revenue when two older medicines, Mirapex for Parkinson’s disease and Flomax to treat enlarged prostate, lose patent protection next year.

The world’s largest closely held pharmaceutical company has been studying flibanserin for more than a decade and it has yet to publish clinical test results showing the drug is effective. The company will lift its veil of secrecy on Monday at the European Society for Sexual Medicine conference with data from trials of more than 5,000 European and U.S. women.

Women’s Distress

The main criterion for the clinical trials, which the company named after flowers, was how many “satisfying sexual events” women said they had experienced after starting treatment. If the results are good, the so-called Bouquet studies, dubbed Violet, Daisy, Dahlia and Orchid, could form the basis for applications to U.S. and European regulators.

The German company is taking a page from Pfizer’s book. The U.S. drugmaker broadened the appeal of Viagra in 1998 by steering clear of the word “impotence” and saying the blue pill addressed a disease called erectile dysfunction. Boehringer is avoiding potentially offensive words such as frigidity and refers to the problem its pill cures by its clinical name, hypoactive sexual desire disorder, or HSDD.

“An increasing body of evidence shows that hypoactive sexual desire disorder causes substantial emotional distress,” said Heike Specht, a spokesman for the company. The drugmaker “has conducted late-stage clinical trials in over 5,000 women from which we hope will result the first available pharmaceutical treatment.”

A Boehringer survey of 31,000 U.S. women aged 18 and above found that one in 10 expressed distress because of diminished sex drive.

Ideological Battle

A sluggish libido is “a real problem,” and early clinical results so far suggest Boehringer’s drug can help, according to Stephen Stahl, a psychopharmacologist and chairman of the Neuroscience Education Institute in Carlsbad, California. Stahl, who has been a consultant for Boehringer, sees a growing role for drugs in treating sexual disorders.

Not everyone agrees there is a disorder to begin with.

In 2003, a year after Boehringer started the Bouquet clinical trials, an article written by Ray Moynihan in the British Medical Journal called female sexual dysfunction “the freshest, clearest example we have” of a disease created by pharmaceutical companies to make healthy people think they need medicine.

“This is for some an ideological battle,” said psychiatrist Michael Berner of the Freiburg University Clinic, who had patients in Boehringer’s studies. “One view is the multi-dimensional view you get from people like me. And then you have these people that say you should work only on relationship issues and that medication cannot have a place.”

‘Like Dancing’

Researchers don’t know why some women’s libido falters, said Pfaus, who has tested compounds in rats for Pfizer, Boehringer and Palatin Technologies Inc. by gauging whether they spur female rats to solicit sex from males.

“An erection is obvious, it’s easy,” Pfaus said. “But desire -- how do you get at that?”

The explanation may be partly evolutionary, according to Berner, who says male primates are driven by a need to spread their semen, while for females it’s important to be able to care for and rear the offspring.

Some researchers believe the social components of intercourse mean that sexual problems can’t be addressed in the same way as heart failure or cancer.

Sex is a “historical and cultural phenomenon,” said Leonore Tiefer, a psychiatry professor at New York University. There’s no baseline of normalcy by which to define a disorder, she contends.

“It’s like dancing, or music, or piano-playing,” Tiefer said. “You do it with the body, but the part the body plays isn’t the largest part.”

Over the Wall

Flibanserin works on the brain by putting “two feet on the brakes” to block the release of a chemical called serotonin, which regulates mood, appetite, sleep and memory, Pfaus said. In time, the process should trigger the production of dopamine, a chemical that, among other jobs, helps stimulate desire.

The drug differs from testosterone, a hormone that’s also been tested to reawaken women’s desire. Berner, interviewed at his study in Freiburg, sketched the picture of a wall to explain how flibanserin works.

“You’re standing here, sad, inhibited,” he said, drawing a stick figure next to the wall on a scrap of paper. “Testosterone would give you a little bit more excitement, so you’d climb over. Flibanserin would take away one of the stones.”

Once a Day

The compound takes three to six weeks to kick in. The pill has to be taken daily, and some women taking part in the clinical trials reported feeling tired, Berner said.

Boehringer recruited women for clinical studies using print advertisements. Berner said his patients were largely professionals in their early 30s to mid-40s, and most chose to continue in the trial in a subsequent phase that ensured they would get the real drug instead of a placebo. Boehringer is recruiting older women for a follow-up study.

Women can be diagnosed with hypoactive sexual desire disorder if they feel concerned, bothered or frustrated by a lack of desire -- or if it’s hurting their relationships.

The company used personal digital assistants to check whether the pill was working. Participants were beeped once a day and asked to rate their level of desire and say whether they had been sexually active and whether it was enjoyable.

Potential Rivals

If flibanserin makes it to market, it will be the first success after a series of failures from drugmakers including Procter & Gamble Co. and Pfizer. The New York-based maker of Viagra abandoned efforts to adapt its pill for women in 2004 and closed sex-health research at the end of last year.

The only female sexual dysfunction therapy approved in the U.S. is Eros-CTD, from NuGyn, Inc., a suction pump that fits over the clitoris much like the erection pumps that predated Viagra. Intrinsa, a testosterone patch from Noven Pharmaceuticals Inc. licensed by Procter & Gamble, is sold in Europe for women whose uteruses have been removed. A U.S. version was put on hold in 2004 on concern about whether it is safe for long-term use.

Still in clinical trials are a new version of the P&G patch; LibiGel, a testosterone gel from BioSante; and bremelanotide, an injected therapy from Palatin Technologies.

Researchers around the world will be watching Boehringer’s results in Lyon, according to Pfaus. “There are probably a lot of companies holding their breath,” he said.

Intolerances vs.allergies

(NaturalNews) Allergies are a condition in which the immune system over-reacts to a substance that is not normally harmful. They can be tested by a doctor and are far less common than intolerances. Intolerances tend to develop due to other imbalances in the body, especially in the gut. Doctors tend to be unfamiliar with intolerances. Intolerances can be treated by balancing the underlying problems in the body and the gut. People can develop allergies or intolerances to foods, chemicals, moulds, dust, animals, rubber, certain metals, and prescription drugs.

What are Intolerances as Opposed to Allergies?

Symptoms of intolerances can include the following:
-Migraines
-Nasal problems
-Eczema
-Dermatitis
-Hayfever
-Asthma
-Joint pain
-Fatigue
-Frequent bloating
-Facial puffiness
-Hives
-Skin rashes
-IBS
-Sinusitis
-Brain Fog
-Muscle pain

What Causes Intolerances?

Intolerances are associated with changes in the environment of the gut which can change the reaction of the immune system in general. In order to effectively deal with intolerances, the foods need to be avoided and the immune system and gut need to be strengthened, since they are at the root of intolerance.

Everyone has good bacteria in their gut which is important in managing the immune system and in promoting immune tolerance. Our gut also has a mucous lining which allows the good bacteria to adhere and stick to the gut lining. It also manages the immune response. When this mucosal lining becomes depleted, good bacteria can also diminish. Additionally, excess bad bacteria can then flourish, and the immune system can become chronically over-reactive. This is known as a pro-inflammatory condition, which increases the release of certain molecules by the immune system called cytokines. Cytokines make us feel groggy, experience pain and tiredness, or have headachy and flu-like systems. Many people do not realise that it is not the food which makes us feel bad. When we have a food intolerance, in fact, it is the immune system response and release of cytokines.

Intolerances have been linked to leaky gut syndrome for many years now. This is a state where the junctions between the cells of the gut lining become wider than they should be, allowing food and other particles into the blood stream which should not be allowed through. This in turn causes an immune system response. Leaky gut is part of the disruption of the gut ecology in general, and can result from over-growth of bad bacteria and from a reduction in the mucosal stomach lining.

What factors can disrupt the health of our gut ecology?

Chronic emotional and mental stress reduces a healthy immune response in the gut, and it reduces important enzymes, which digest food correctly, leading to overgrowth of bad bacteria and a leaky gut. An excessively sugary or poor diet feeds bad bacteria in the gut leading to immune disruption. Antibiotic usage lowers good gut bacteria. Toxins and pollution (e.g. heavy metals and pesticides) deplete the body's detox systems, which in turn overwhelms the immune system, causing overgrowth of bad bacteria in the gut.

Increase Intake of:

-Cabbage, papaya, and liquorice tea which are all gut healing

-Fiber in vegetables, lentils and beans

-Oily fish, nuts and seeds as these contain essential fatty acids
including omega 3 and 6, which promote a healthy mucosal gut lining

-Drink 12-16 glasses of pure water per day.

New herb for cancer treatment-Chinese study

(NaturalNews) Chinese scientists have found that an extract of a common flowering plant -- known to most of us as mums -- could be a potent cancer treatment. In a series of studies, a research team headed by Professor Zong-fang Li from the Second Affiliated Hospital at Xi'an Jiaotong University's School of Medicine has previously demonstrated that Chrysanthemum indicum extract (CIE) possesses antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and neuroprotective effects. Now, in a paper published in the September issue of the World Journal of Gastroenterology, they report that it also kills human cancer cells through a process known as apoptosis.

In a statement to the media, the scientists explained that researchers have noted the possible anticancer activity of Chrysanthemum indicum before, especially against the most common type of liver cancer known as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). But just how CIE works against this and possibly other malignancies has not been known. So, to address this important issue , the Xi'an Jiaotong University investigators studied the effects of CIE on cancer cells in the lab, using a line of human liver cancer cells known as HCC MHCC97H.

For the experiment, Professor Li and his colleagues used both rat hepatocytes (liver cells) and human endothelial cells (cells that line the interior surface of blood vessels) as controls. The results of the experiment showed that CIE dramatically inhibited the proliferation of the HCC MHCC97H cancer cells. And CIE induced apoptosis, too, a form of cell death in which a programmed sequence of events leads to the elimination of cells without releasing harmful substances into the surrounding area. This process involves a series of biochemical events that lead to changes in the cell membrane, shrinkage of cells, nuclear fragmentation and chromosomal DNA fragmentation.

However, the chrysanthemum extract did not cause any harm to the normal rat and human cells. Bottom line: the chrysanthemum derived extract showed such potency specifically against cancerous cells -- while not damaging normal, healthy cells -- that CIE could be a promising novel treatment for human cancer.

Using chrysanthemums for natural healing isn't a new idea. Traditional healers in numerous cultures have long used parts of the plant and its flowers to treat dizziness, headaches, fevers, inflammation and more (http://www.herbreference.com/chrysa...). When used as a houseplant, chrysanthemums can also help improve air quality.

Green tea decreases with 42% blood cancers

(Natural News) A Japanese green tea study has determined impressive results regarding the reduction of blood and lymph cancers. Tohoku University researchers found a 42 percent reduction for blood cancers and 48 percent reduction for lymph cancers with high green tea consumption.

To arrive at these results, they analyzed the age, gender, lifestyle and health of 40,000 Japanese over a ten-year period. The epidemiological studies (statistical observations over time) of Japan have been bolstered with western clinical application and lab studies that revealed interesting observations.

For example, the Mayo Clinic of Minnesota fed leukemia patients large doses of GTE's (green tea extracts) and discovered immediate benefits in their patients. However, the doctors consider GTE's a helpful adjunct to orthodox cancer treatments. They declined the notion of using GTE's exclusively or in conjunction with other natural cancer treatments.

Researchers in Spain and England isolated the mechanics of green tea's inhibition of cancer cells. Their research was published back in the March 2005 issue of Cancer Research. They found that ECGC, an extremely abundant catechin in green teas inhibits the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR).

Catechins are active polyphenolic antioxidant metabolites in green tea. The DHFR enzymes they inhibit are needed by cancer cells to proliferate. Upon closer scrutiny of green tea ECGC, they determined that its molecular structure closely resembles that of the cancer drug methotrexate used in chemotherapy.

The good news is that the binding properties of ECGC is not as intense as the drug methotrexate. Therefore, the side effects of green tea are minimal. But there is one situation where green tea's ECGC binding to DHFR can be detrimental: ECGC binding to DHFR can inhibit the folic acid needed by women pregnant in their first trimester. This situation has been shown to increase the risk of her child being born with spina bifida or other fetal neurological disorders.

Because of this, it is recommended that women curb their green tea consumption just prior to pregnancy and during the first trimester.

Genetic studies-NO clinical relevance

(NaturalNews) Genetic analysis is essentially useless in predicting a person's risk of cancer, heart attack or other common diseases, according to a set of commentaries published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The decoding of the human genome in 2003 led to a flood of research into the contributions that genetic variation might make to the risk of various chronic diseases that tend to develop late in life, such as diabetes, heart disease or cancer. Since then, a number of for-profit companies have begun offering genetic screenings and disease risk assessments.

"With only a few exceptions, what the genomics companies are doing right now is recreational genomics," said David B. Goldstein of Duke University, author of one of the commentaries. "The information has little or in many cases no clinical relevance."

A few diseases, such as sickle cell anemia or Tay Sachs disease, can be caused by a mutation on a single gene. Most diseases, however, are much more complex, and develop due to an interaction between environmental factors and the contributions of a variety of genes.

In order to calculate the genetic contribution to these diseases, geneticists developed the technique known as genomewide association study, in which the genomes of groups of healthy people are compared with the genomes of those with a certain disease. The hope among researchers has been that this analysis could point out genetic differences between the groups that might be linked to disease risk.

While genomewide analysis has successfully identified some differences between the genetic codes of healthy and diseased patients, these differences provide little information about disease risk. Researchers expected to find a small number of common genetic variations that were responsible for each disease. Instead, common gene variants appear to contribute to disease risk only very marginally.

Goldstein suggests that the genetic component of chronic disease risk might arise from a large number of rare genetic variants, making genetic screening far less helpful in predicting risk. If only a small number of variants are involved, they might provide information on the biological pathways that lead to the development of the disease. If many different variations are implicated, however, this would tell researchers nothing except that an error in the functioning of nearly any bodily system can contribute to disease risk.

"In pointing at everything," Goldstein wrote, "genetics would point at nothing."

Based on the failure of more than 100 genomewide studies -- carried out on thousands of patients in a number of different countries -- to deliver useful results, Goldstein suggests that the approach should be abandoned as a waste of resources. Genomewide analysis is only effective at uncovering common variations with large effects, Goldstein says. Discovering rare variants with smaller effects is "beyond the grasp of the genomewide association studies."

A single genomewide analysis study costs several million dollars to carry out.

In addition, as more such studies are carried out, each one will deliver less new information on gene-related disease risk -- a problem of diminishing returns.

Also writing in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers Peter Kraft and David J. Hunter of the Harvard School of Public Health disagree with Goldstein that the studies are incapable of providing useful data. They agree, however, that they have provided no clinically useful information to date.

Kraft and Hunter warned that any risk estimate based on genetic analysis is likely either too low or too high, because researchers simply do not have enough information on genetic contribution to disease. Risks that are calculated as lower than they actually are will likely never be reported to patients. This means that any genetic risk a patient actually gets told about is probably an overestimate, and only likely to cause unnecessary alarm.

Fermented vegetables and their benefit

(NaturalNews) Eating fermented vegetables can be one of the best things for overall health. Fermentation is an excellent way to preserve food, ensuring fresh vitamin-rich food all winter. It also infuses the body with beneficial microflora which can keep you healthy and strong.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are five tastes: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and pungent. All five tastes need to be eaten for optimum health. Fermented vegetables have a "sour" taste, which is under-eaten in this country. The sour taste corresponds to the wood element and benefits the liver and gall bladder.

Healthy bacterial cultures such as Lactobacillus are present in cultured vegetables. The more healthy microflora one has the more the body`s receptors are blocked when exposed to dangerous bacteria and viruses. Fermented vegetables are high in antioxidants and benefit health in many ways, including:

Preserving nutrients and breaking them down into more easily digestible forms

Creating new cultures, which then create B vitamins such as folic acid, riboflavin, niacin, thiamin and biotin

Removing toxins from food: all grains contain phytic acid which blocks absorption of zinc, calcium, iron and magnesium. Soaking and fermenting grains neutralizes the phytic acid.

Promoting digestive health by flooding the intestines with beneficial microflora

Sandor Ellix Katz, author of Wild Fermentation credits fermented foods as being key to his superb health and energy, despite living with AIDS for many years. Many healing diets including macrobiotics and Ann Wigmore`s raw food and wheatgrass diet use fermented foods as a way to regain health. Macrobiotics uses miso - a fermented soybean paste - as well as tempeh and tamari, two other cultured soy products. Ann Wigmore`s diet uses rejuvelac, a beverage made from fermented sprouted grains.

Beneficial bacteria are readily available on vegetables and in the air, so no starter culture is necessary. Simply provide the right environment with:

Unrefined sea salt, which inhibits unwanted bacteria

Liquid, which prevents the vegetables from molding.

Cabbage is often used as the base because it is loaded with the beneficial bacteria required. Other vegetables, such as carrots, scallions, and broccoli, can also be added.

Cabbage is often used as the base because it is loaded with the beneficial bacteria required. Other vegetables, such as carrots, scallions, and broccoli, can also be added.

To make delicious fermented vegetables:

Chop or grate your chosen vegetables into tiny pieces. The smaller they are the more readily they will release their liquids and faster they will culture.

Mix all vegetables in a large bowl.

Use the salt liberally while mixing, to taste. A quart of sauerkraut will have at least 1 to 3 Tbsp of salt.

As you are mixing the vegetables you will find liquid is being released.

Pour the liquid and the vegetables into a jar.

Press down to release any air bubbles and to submerge the vegetables completely.

Large cabbage leaves can be rolled and pressed down on top to keep the vegetables submerged. A weight such as a smaller jar filled with water can be placed on top. Cover with a cloth to keep insects out. Or simply cap the jar once the vegetables are submerged (without adding the weight). Open the jar daily to release the pressure and to taste your kraut.

The vegetables should be kept at room temperature for at least 4 to 7 days. The warmer it is the faster they will culture. Some people culture their vegetables for weeks to months. Once you like the way they taste place the jar in the refrigerator where it should keep indefinitely.

Cat's claw uses in integral health

(NaturalNews) There is much talk about cat's claw and its healing properties used for the treatment of cancer, but cat's claw can be used in the treatment of many illnesses. It is not just for cancer, but it is also used in the treatment of asthma, arthritis, gastritis, hemorrhoids, inflammations of the urinary track, kidney detox, healing deep wounds and bone pain. It is also used since the 1990's for the treatment of cancer, ulcers, chronic inflammations, and viral diseases (such as herpes).

Cat's Claw is a plant of the Amazon rain forest. There are two main species and they are Uncaria tomentosa and Uncaria guianensis. In the US, you see mainly Uncaria tomentosa and in Europe you will see the Uncaria guianensis. The medicine is derived from the bark and the root of the plant. Several of the Mexican species have toxic properties. Cat's foot is not the same thing as cat's claw.

Cat's Claw and Alzheimer's Disease:

There are new studies being done on rats for the use of cat's claw on Alzheimer's Disease. The plant improves the immune system and prevents the deposit of beta-amyloid plagues on the brain. The tests showed that the mixture of cat's claw, rosemary and gotu kola worked better than cat's claw alone. The researchers are hoping to begin trials on humans in the near future, but the results on rats show promise for the prevention of Alzheimer's Disease.

Dosage for Cat's Claw:

Asthma - You must make a cat's claw tonic. Take 1/2 liter of water and 100 grams of cat's claw roots and bring to boil. Drink this water for one month.

Brain tumors - Place 250 ml of water and 1 tsp of cat's claw powder in a pan and bring to boil. Continue to boil for thirty minutes. Strain this mixture and drink the liquid. You must do this for six months before seeing a considerable improvement. This recipe can also be used for other forms of cancer also, except Leukemia which has reports of complications using Cat's Claw.

Note: It should be noted that it is suggested to use this in conjunction with other remedies, such as Nigella Sativa.

Intestinal disorders such as dysentery, ulcers and diverticulosis - Place one cup of water and 1 tablespoon of cat's claw powder and boil for 10-15 minutes. Strain the tea and drink three times a day.

Mumps - You must take 60mg of the extract, divided in three equal doses for ten days.

Osteoarthritis of the knee - You must take 100mg of cat's claw extract daily.

Rheumatoid arthritis - You must take 60mg per day. Divide the dose into three equal doses. If using the dried herbs, then take 100mg in vegetarian capsules. Expect results after 5 months.

Note: Please make sure the extract you are using contains no extra additives such as tetra cyclic oxindole alkaloids. These chemicals work against the natural compounds of cat's claw in the preventing of pain for rheumatoid arthritis.

Recipes Using Cat's Claw:

Tincture: Place 8 ounces of ground cat's claw along with 5 cups of vodka in a sealed jar and place the jar in a warm place. After three weeks, strain the liquor through some cheesecloth. This recipe may be reduced in half. This tincture is good for allergies and arthritis. Use 5 drops of the tincture, three times a day and increase slowly as needed. Never use more than 15 drops at a time.

Ointment: Take one cup of water and 2 teaspoon of the cat's claw powder. Bring it to boil and keep boiling until it turns brown. Strain the liquid and add an equal amount of coconut oil or virgin olive oil (not extra virgin). Place it back on the stove and heat again over medium heat. Boil it until it quits bubbling rapidly and bubbles no longer appear on the oil. Use this as an ointment for Herpes and any type of viral infections. Also good for pain of arthritis or cancer.

Cream: Use the same recipe above except add in some beeswax. For every cup of oil add in 1/2 ounce of beeswax. Heat over the flame and stir until thick and creamy. You could use cocoa butter instead of beeswax. The cream may be used as the ointment, directly on the skin.

Warnings About Using Cat's Claw:

Taking cat's claw for a short time has shown very little side effects. There could be headaches, dizziness and vomiting in some cases.

People who are pregnant, breast-feeding and have auto-immune diseases (MS, Lupus, HIV, Tuberculosis) should not take cat's claw.

Special Note: Cat's claw might make patients with Leukemia worst. If you have Leukemia, seek an alternative therapy such as Nigella Sativa.

Preventing ovarian cancer with nutrition

(NaturalNews) High intake of foods containing the natural plant compound apigenin might decrease a woman's risk of ovarian cancer, researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School have found.

Apigenin is a class of flavonoid, a phytonutrient (plant compound) family known for its high antioxidant activity. Antioxidants are renowned for removing cell-damaging free radicals from the body, thereby reducing the symptoms of aging and the risk of chronic disease such as cancer and heart disease.

Foods high in apigenin include celery, parsley, tomato sauce and red wine. The compound is widely believed to be safe when consumed in plant foods, with no toxic or mutagenic effects.

In a study funded by the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health, and published in the International Journal of Cancer, researchers gave questionnaires to 1,141 ovarian cancer patients and 1,183 women of similar age to assess the content of their diets over the course of one week. The average participant age was 51. Women with ovarian cancer were more likely to be heavier and have a higher daily calorie intake, with a less healthy diet than the healthy women.

The researchers used the questionnaires to calculate the participants' intake of five different, common flavonoids: apigenin, kaempferol, luteolin, myricetin and quercetin. The bulk of these antioxidants in the women's diets came from tea, red wine, apples, blueberries, celery, kale, lettuce, oranges and tomato sauce.

Higher intake of certain rich-rich foods such as cauliflower, raisins and tomato sauce was associated with a decreased risk of ovarian cancer, though this correlation was not statistically significant. There was no correlation between total flavonoid consumption and cancer risk after adjusting for known cancer risk factors such as age, physical activity, use of oral contraceptives, and history of childbirth, breastfeeding and tubal ligation. There was also no correlation between cancer risk and any of the flavonoids except for apigenin.

Women with the highest apigenin intake, however, had a "borderline significant" 28 percent lower risk of ovarian cancer than women with the lowest intake, after adjusting for other risk factors and intake of the other four flavonoids.

Ovarian cancer is among the most lethal forms of cancer in women. There are 20,000 new cases in the United States each year, leading to 15,000 deaths per year. According to the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, the disease affects one in 69 women and kills one in 95.

This study is not the first to indicate a connection between apigenin and decreased cancer risk. Previous research has found that apigenin decreases the structural stability and inhibits the expression of a protein that is involved in the migration of ovarian cancer cells to other parts of the body. It has also been more directly observed to interfere with the movement of ovarian cancer cells. Apigenin has also been shown to inhibit the expression in ovarian cancer cells of a protein linked to the development of blood vessels in tumors, as well as overall tumor growth.

Other studies have found that apigenin inhibits the growth of some breast cancers and may induce programmed cell death. Higher intake of other flavonoids has also been shown to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer.

EPPUR SI MUOVE

"Eppur si muove !" Galileo's heroic outcry was legitimized recently by the Vatican (1). After twelve years of inquiry the Vatican concluded that both sides in the dispute acted in good faith. At that time, Galileo's arguments were still inconclusive and the Inquisition remained therefore unconvinced. It is true that the compelling evidence for the Heliocentric theory was obtained nearly a century later (2), still, doubts about the sincerity of Inquisition remain. Vatican's declaration is regarded by the scientific community as a victory in a prolonged and on going dispute on profound issues, and attention is now turned to the next, Darwin versus Creationism. However, "Eppur si muove" unveils also a hidden and unpleasant aspect of modern science, far less heroic, and relevant to medicine.

"The sun rises and the sun goes down. . ." (Ecclesiastes)

Modern science has accepted the Copernican hypothesis as dogma, regarding it as absolute truth. And yet, the Heliocentric theory contradicts our daily experience of a rising and setting sun. Does this new view of the universe justify the abandoning of ancient wisdom, e.g., that of Ecclesiastes (Chapter 1,5) ? We are told that by simplifying the representation of the universe the Heliocentric hypothesis improved the predictability of eclipses. Ptolemy's representation, based on the Geocentric doctrine, was extremely complex. Heavenly bodies moved in epicycles and the estimation of their trajectories was difficult. On the other hand in the Heliocentric universe conceived by Kepler, planets moved along simple ellipses. The universe became simpler and even more esthetic. Still, does this justify the rejection of daily experience? Why not leave Kepler's equations to Caesar and keep Ptolemy's for our daily life? Isn't Ecclesiastes' view of the universe as worthy and esthetic as Kepler's? Such a heretic view is met by modern science with contempt. Ptolemy's proponents are regarded as quacks, charlatans or alchemists, since "Ptolemy was wrong and Galileo is right !". This is the hidden aspect of Galileo's struggle. It is a struggle on absolute truth. Now, since even the Vatican backs Galileo's "eppur si muove", Ptolemy is wrong by decree of Heaven.

Absolute truth

According to the Vatican, the Inquisition did not object so much to the Copernican theory, but to Galilelo's belief in its absolute truth. "Had Galileo not championed the absolute triumph of the Copernican hypothesis, he would not have been persecuted" (2). In view of the "benevolent" history of the Inquisition such an understatement sounds like a farce. Yet it illuminates the hidden aspect of the feud between Science and Church. The monopoly of absolute truth.
Prior to the era of modern science absolute truth was part of religious belief, revealed to mortals by prophets and demi-gods. To the first Greek philosophers, e.g., Thales, Anaximander and Heraclitus (3), truth was relative. Later on Plato laid the foundation of an absolute reality that is concealed from us. His philosophy was adopted by the exact sciences claiming that knowledge of absolute truth is achievable scientifically. This view places scientists like Galileo shoulder to shoulder with prophets and other messengers from Heaven. An unacceptable situation that the Church tries to correct with the aid of its Inquisition.

Big Bang

Einstein posed even a greater threat to the Church than Galileo. Galileo dethroned only the Earth, while Einstein dethroned Heaven and its inhabitants. Fortunately the Church was saved by Einstein's disciple, S. Hawking, the high priest of the "Big Bang" theory (4). Hawking's mathematical equations describe concisely the history of the universe from its very beginning, leaving the actual creation to God. While Science and Church embrace Hawking with love, his theory actually refutes the existence of absolute truth. It demonstrates that both, Copernicus and Kepler, were wrong.

According to Kepler, since planets move in ellipses, each year the earth will advance along the same route. Yet if the universe continuously expands, as maintained by Hawking, we all expand in it and earth trajectory is not an ellipse but an ever expanding spiral far more complicated than Ptolemy's epicycles. In Hawking's universe neither does the sun go around the earth, nor is the opposite true. Why not then embrace Ecclesiastes?

The censored Albert Einstein

This seemingly unexpected conclusion was obvious to Albert Einstein. His theory may be difficult to understand, yet its name reveals its philosophical background. Einstein's relativity applies to our measurements and how we conceive the universe. Since everything is relative, so is truth. According to Einstein "the two sentences 'the sun is at rest and the earth moves' or the sun moves and the earth is at rest' . . .can be used with equal justification." (2,5). Einstein's relativity of truth is ignored by the scientific community or better, it is censored in its collective consciousness.
The three theories, Ptolemy's, Copernicus', and Einsteins', are equivalent, neither replaces the other, and they are used when convenient. Kepler's laws are used for predicting eclipses, galaxies continue expanding according to Hawking's equations, and the geocentric universe still dominates our daily life since it appeals most to our common sense. The same common sense that served medicine from the dawn of mankind and was banned by the exact sciences.

Ludwik Fleck

Fleck was interested in the philosophical theory of reality. As physician he realized that the Platonic approach of the exact sciences is not applicable to medical reasoning and felt that neither does it applies to exact sciences themselves. "Truths" evolve and emerge (6,7). Truth in science depends on a particular thinking style by a group of scientists, or thought-collective. A thought-collective is "a community of persons exchanging ideas or maintaining intellectual interaction". The individuals of a thought-collective share the same thought-style. Truth and falsehood in science are meaningful only within a specific thought-collective and with respect to a given thought-style and depend on the purpose of investigation. Different views can be equally true (8).

Fleck maintained that even if in the thought-collective of the exact sciences truth is regarded as absolute, it is actually relative to the truths of other thought-styles. The "eppur si muove" story supports Fleck's assertion that even in the exact sciences truth is relative and continuously evolves . Science and religion belong to two thought collectives of persons exchanging ideas. In spite of their different names both may be regarded as sciences. Nothing in the scientific thought-style makes it more "scientific" than that of the Church. Yet if relativity of truth is taken as scientific hallmark, the two thought-styles differ. Why not then leave absolute truth to the Church?

The Bible as scientific document

The three western religions regard the Bible as ultimate truth and have difficulty to deal with modern scientific discoveries that are either not mentioned in the Bible or contradict it. Like dinosaurs whose remnants are obvious even to believers? Or, how to reconcile between the Genesis story and Darwinism? According to the Israeli philosopher and scientist J. Leibowitz the Bible is not a scientific document. Its sole role is to guide Jews how to serve God. On the other hand, many stories in the Bible were proven scientifically, and archeologists search the Bible for clues where to dig and how to interpret their findings, regarding it as a valuable scientific document.
From the viewpoint of the scientific thought-style, the Bible is a scientific document, and its statements, scientific hypotheses. One of them is Creationism. Despite its "Ptolemic aura", it is a valid scientific hypothesis. Yet when creationists maintain that theirs is the only correct theory they actually join the non-scientific thought collective. As long as this aspect of Creationism is explained to the students there is actually no harm in teaching Creationism in schools

Truth in medicine

Medical thought-style (9,10) has a unique way for examining the correctness of statements. Any statement that improves the patient's well being or restores his health is medically correct. Medicine should investigate not only traditional statements, but also the so called "unproved methods", usually labeled as quack medicine, e.g., para-medical theories, Chinese method, or spiritual approach .(11). Following the example of the exact sciences, modern medicine still adheres to absolute truth, attacking dissenters, even devoted physicians and healers (12). The medical establishment does not shy away from attacking even distinguished opponents like P. Duesberg, a retro-virus expert who doubts that AIDS is caused by HIV. Duesberg may not be a Galileo, yet the scientific establishment hastily applies Inquisition tactics in order to destroy his credibility (13).
Indeed "eppur si mouve". Earth, sun , truth. Anything! (3).

Detoxify with Red Clover !

Red Clover Flowers (trifolium pratense):
An Effective Anticancer Herb?

Red clover is one of the ingredients in both the Hoxsey and Essiac herbal “anticancer” teas. According to "In Concert Against Cancer" by Willow Older, October, 1998, “[r]ed clover is one of the world's oldest and most common natural cancer remedies. In fact, one study found that 33 cultures use the herb against the disease.”

Among the numerous herbs for cancer in existence, Jerry Lee Hoover N.D. of cancernaturalcure.com highly recommends red clover (the bulk red clover flowers, not the stem, roots [nor red clover capsules]). Dr. Hoover writes that red clover has been used in the US for over 100 years in cancer treatment and prevention and that he himself has used it for many years at his clinic where he has seen many individuals recover from cancer. It "is good for cancer on any part of the body".
Red clover apparently contains the following chemicals, vitamins and minerals: biotin, choline, copper, zinc, coumarins, glycosides, inositol, magnesium, manganese, selenium, vitamin A, B1, B3, B5, B6, B9, B12, B17, C, P. Red clover has also been "studied for anti-aids and anti-diabetic activity" (Foster, S.& Duke, J.A., “ Medicinal Plants” Houghton-Mufflin Company, Boston pg. 158, 1990).

Red clover (Trifolium pratense) also contains genistein, a compound that prevents new blood vessels from forming in a tumor. Compare angiogenesis.

Here are the instructions for using red clover flowers as an (adjunct) cancer treatment according to Jerry Lee Hoover N.D.:
Make a tea by bringing the water to a boil, removing from the heat and adding the herb. Let it steep for 20 minutes or longer. Use one to two teaspoons of herb per cup of tea. The best time to take the tea is at night before bed on an empty stomach. If you take it twice a day, then also first thing in the morning when you first get up on an empty stomach.
You can order the herb Red Clover from Frontier Herbs Phone 1-800-669-3275 or on line at frontierherbs.com [as well as probably other places. Make very sure to get organic or wild-crafted quality].

The above-quoted Willow Older adds a warning that red clover “may create problems for certain cancer patients. For example, says Labriola, women being treated for breast cancer with the drug tamoxifen should avoid red clover because tamoxifen prevents estrogen from reaching a tumor, and phytoestrogenic compounds in red clover could undermine that action. In this case, it's possible red clover could feed, not starve, an estrogen-dependent breast tumor, Labriola warns.
The scientific study of red clover is still new. Although its anticancer compounds make it an effective cancer-fighting food for some people, only further research will clarify red clover's future cancer treatment role (Cancer Research, vol. 48, no. 22).”

And according to healthgate.partners.org (excerpted):

“Although [red clover] has been used for many purposes worldwide, the one condition most consistently associated with red clover is cancer.

In the nineteenth century, red clover became popular among herbalists as an "alterative" or "blood purifier." This medical term, long since defunct, refers to an ancient belief that toxins in the blood are the root cause of many illnesses. Cancer, eczema, and the eruptions of venereal disease were all seen as manifestations of toxic buildup.

Red clover was considered one of the best herbs to "purify" the blood. For this reason, it is included in many of the famous treatments for cancer, including Jason Winter's cancer-cure tea.

Recently, special red clover extracts high in substances called isoflavones have arrived on the market.

These isoflavones produce effects in the body somewhat similar to those of estrogen, and for this reason they are called phytoestrogens (“phyto” indicates a plant source). The major isoflavones in red clover include genistein and daidzen, also found in soy, as well as formononetin and biochanin.

There is no evidence that red clover can help treat cancer. However, its usage in many parts of the world as a traditional cancer remedy has prompted scientists to take a close look at the herb. It turns out that the isoflavones in red clover may possess antitumor activity in the test tube.1,2 However, such preliminary research does not prove that red clover can treat cancer.

Knowledge about cancer cells

Here’s how it works. Normal cells that turn cancerous have specific jobs to do. Brain cells do brainy things, heart cells are on a bungee-jumper’s rush, liver cells strain today’s whiskey, kidney cells strain the beer and save the water, bladder cells hold the nasty stuff that the others strain, and skin cells enjoy a good suntan on a summer day. They all do different jobs. But when they turn cancerous, they throw all of that specialization aside.

Cancer cells do not evolve; they devolve. They do not perform the task specified in the blueprints of DNA, but they rebel and go it alone. Cancer cells give up being a high level technical worker in the body and become instead the lowest form of life. Worse than any truant teenager – all they do all day is eat, excrete, reproduce and do it all while holding their breath. While holding their breath? What is this little detail that is overlooked by the oncologists?

Curing Cancer with Baking Soda:

What MD’s and Naturopaths Don’t Know

by Gregory Delaney

Wouldn’t the delusional physicians and the big pharmacology swindlers be embarrassed to find that cancer could be cured with nothing more complicated than ordinary baking soda? Well, no, they wouldn’t be embarrassed because they would be outraged. All of their billions in profits vanishing in a twinkle, would not have these betrayers of Mankind at all happy with such a simple cancer cure. And yet, cancer can be cured with nothing more complicated than ordinary baking soda. And I will explain how.

While the greedy physicians and the cancer industry robber barons have been using every imaginable method for treating the symptoms of cancer, and while millions of people have suffered and died under the most astounding variety of mechanical, chemical, bio-technological and radiological absurdities, little progress in curing cancer has actually been made. And why? Well, to understand why, you would have to understand who is treating cancer before you can understand why it is not being cured. Who are these cancer physicians who claim to know so much yet fail to do anything useful?

Firstly, they are people who admit that they don’t know the cause of cancer or how to cure it. And yet they insist that they be allowed to “practice medicine” anyway! These oncologists admit that no matter what they do, you are going to die anyway, and so why not let them do something since they can make better use of your money than you can. Even though they admit that they don’t know what they are doing, they offer you just two (and only two) choices: (1) let them cut-poison-irradiate-and-transplant you which includes a free estimation of how long you will live or (2) do nothing at all which also includes a free, but much shorter, estimation of how long you will live. And so, with such limited choices, most people prefer to bequeath their savings account to the doctors for choice number one. At best, the physicians promise to drug you into unconsciousness so that you do not feel any pain either from your tumors or from their billing department.

But what happens if you don’t take their advice and choose alternative medicine, instead – you know, the choice that the doctors never mention to their patients? Since it has been proven that hospital patients live longer when the doctors go on strike, then alternative medicine is obviously better than a placebo. But they never mention that, either.

Secondly, these oncologists with all of their fancy degrees and years of microscopic confusion are really nothing more than disciples of fraud. This fraud is known as “symptomatic medicine”. And these cancer physicians prove their idiocy on a daily basis by classifying cancer as a “disease”. Would it be a joke on them if it was discovered that cancer really is not a disease at all but merely a “symptom” of something else? Hundreds of millions of dying cancer patients would certainly not be laughing. And millions of billionaire Big Pharma swindlers would not be laughing, either. Would it be a joke if it was discovered that cancer is not a disease at all and that these swindling greed-bags were actually mistaking the symptoms for the disease? I don’t think there would be much laughter in finding this to be true; but it is true. And here’s how this simple cure works.

The cancer quacks who are known as “modern physicians” (or oncology engineers), all know that there are many things that cause cancer. Does this ring a bell in their mighty brains? No, of course not. If there are many things that cause cancer, then how can cancer be classified as a disease? Isn’t it true, rather, that the many causative agents are the disease while the manifestations of tumors and malignancies are actually the symptom? This may seem strange but think about it a bit. And you alternative practitioners had better think about it a bit since the physicians have already proven that they are on the wrong track and haven’t thought about it enough.

If many things cause cancer (radiation, chemicals, viruses, sunlight, etc.) then even the dumbest physician knows enough to remove the primary cause. So, patients who work in the bright sun or in chemical factories are advised to avoid these situations. Hooray for the doctors who have common sense! But why are they so few?

Once you remove the primal cause, you are still left with a growing malignancy. (I am referring to the growing tumor and not to the doctors and the Big Pharma executives, themselves.) This cancerous growth has certain attributes that the idiot doctors overlook because they have been trained to use the most expensive methods possible for producing the largest possible profit for themselves and for their hospitals and for their drug suppliers. And after extracting all possible savings accounts, checking accounts, real property and insurance benefits, they send the dying patient home after saying, “We have done everything that we can do.” No, I don’t think many people will be laughing to discover that cancer can be cured with baking soda.

But even after the primary cause of the cancer is removed, why do the cancer cells keep growing? The doctors say because cancer is a disease. However, these practitioners of “symptomatic medicine” are mistaking the disease for the symptom. It is more accurate to say that the cancer is not the disease, itself, but is rather the symptom.

The maniac oncologists cut and radiate and poison and burn the cancer cells in an attempt to kill them. But the alternative practitioner prefers to let the powerful defenses of the body do all the work. And why? Because the body can take care of itself just fine as long as you provide it with what it needs to do the necessary healing. In this case, first remove the causative factors of cancer (such as the oncologists and Big Pharma robber barons) and then get to work on the underlying causes.

All cancer has some common denominators that the physicians think are inconsequential. But if you think about it a little bit, you will see that the oncologists are full of themselves and not full of knowledge. What they think is the disease, is actually the symptom. And what they think is inconsequential is actually the tiny, little cause for all of this suffering and disease. It’s a joke on the doctors, but nobody is laughing.

That’s right. Cancer cells don’t require a lot of oxygen to live. In fact, it is this low oxygen level that allows them to thrive. Or to put it in a way that even a physician can understand: Cancer cells become cancerous not because they are the disease but because they are normal cells reacting to the causative factors of disease. That is, cancer cells become cancer cells because they are normal cells that cannot live in any other way. They are following the First Commandment of Life: “Thou must live”. And in order for them to live, they must give up their specific functions in the body and devolve to a lower level of Life that is not so demanding of them. They become cancer cells in order to survive, not because they want to be cancer cells.

From this perspective you can say that cancer is normal. It is not a disease but rather it is the reaction of certain cells in the body to stress factors that cause these cells to choose de-evolution to a cancerous state as a means of cellular survival. They give up being highly advanced cells – brain, heart, liver, kidney, skin, etc. – and take a step downward to a lower function. They become cancerous as a survival strategy because nature only gives them this choice – or they must die. Cancer is the reaction of cells to various factors that will cause their death if they do not devolve to a lower, cancerous state.

Here briefly is what the Johns Hopkins Hospital newsletter stated:

Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells.

“Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer cells are being starved.”

5. “Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.”

6. “A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).”

7. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water – best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic. Avoid it.”

8. “Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup.”

9. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6 , Flor-ssence , Essiac , anti-oxidants , vitamins , minerals , EFAs, etc.) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.”
“Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, un-forgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment.

“Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells."

One of the much-overlooked “minor” details of cancer cells is that they thrive in a low oxygen environment. When the body is not able to fully oxygenate, these cells must either die of asphyxiation and toxic build-up or they must devolve to a lower state of existence where they can live and grow without so much oxygen. They become cancerous because there is not enough oxygen for them to remain normally functioning.

In point #1, above, the physicians rightfully state that cancerous cells feed on sugar. Actually, all cells feed on glucose. They absolutely do not seem to understand the difference between what glucose and sucrose do to the blood. What the physicians are missing is that the sucrose table sugar, the white flour products, the red meats, dairy products, coffee, candy and soda pop that the hospital provides from the hospital kitchen and from the Coke and candy machines on every floor, are bad enough on their own. These are the junk foods that the patients, themselves, got sick on. What the physicians do not understand is the blood chemistry that these junk foods unbalance. Yes, they take the necessary chemical tests. But they do not understand their own data because they are looking for a complicated treatment when the simple cure is staring them in the face.

Everybody knows how to stick a toy balloon on the wall after rubbing it on your head. It will stick tightly during dry weather but maybe not at all during damp weather. This is because the electro-static charge is strong during dry weather but gets leaked away during damp weather. Well, the same principle applies to how oxygen sticks to the blood cells during oxygenation, but in an ionic fluid instead of in an electrostatic gas.

As blood cells pass through the lungs, there is a very delicate balancing act that takes place between their cell surfaces and the ionic charges of the surrounding plasma. As they pass through the lungs, these purple-colored blood cells have the ionic charge that they received when picking up carbon dioxide. In contact with lung oxygen, this charge gets reversed so that the carbon dioxide drops off and the reversed charge attracts and picks up oxygen molecules. As their ionic charge reverses as they pick up a full supply of oxygen and their color changes from purple to red, these oxygenated blood cells are carried along through the body until they get into the vicinity of body cells that have a surplus of carbon-dioxide and need some oxygen. At that point, the ionic charges again reverse as the oxygen drops off and the carbon dioxide is attracted and sticks to the blood cell which once again changes to a purple color and is carried to the lungs. Yin and yang, a changing balance of polarities.

But just like a toy balloon that cannot stick to the wall in wet weather, oxygen cannot stick to a blood cell if the ionic balance of the blood is acidic. This is what the physicians and oncologists are overlooking. Every damned one of them has observed the ringing alarm bell going off but have muffled their ears and closed their eyes because they are looking for some expensive and complicated cure for cancer when both the cause and the cure are actually very simple.

Oxygen cannot stick to blood cells if the pH of the blood is acidic. And rather than do everything that they can to raise the pH back up to a normal pH of 7.4 so that the blood can function properly, they prefer surgery. All of the advice that they have stolen from naturopathic medicine about “deep breathing” will do them no good at all. You can breath pure oxygen until you catch on fire but if the blood pH is acidic, then the oxygen will not be able to be picked up by the blood cells. It is chemically impossible. The blood must be normal and normal blood has a pH of around 7.4 pH. Any vestigial traces of oxygen that the acid-drenched blood cells manage to pick up are stripped off early by the oxygen-starved cells along the way and never reach the deeper parts of the body where oxygen is most needed. And because the pH is acidic, carbon dioxide also is not transported efficiently and so builds up within the tissues leading both to cell death and to a cell-to-cancer de-evolution for survival.

Summary: The best way to ensure a good balance for most people is to just eat two servings or more of fruit or vegetables for every serving of protein or grain and use a multimineral.

Some think cancer and some other degenerative diseases are affected by a too-acid mantle, so raising pH to normal levels is desirable. Oxygen is absorbed more efficiently by the cells when the body is tending alkaline. Alkylosis can be a problem just like acidosis, although it is less common. One problem with tending toward acidosis is that the body will maintain blood pH in a narrow range at all costs.

When the body tends acid, calcium and other minerals are removed from the bones or organs to bring the pH up, and this can cause mineral deficiencies which can affect cellular respiration and nutrition, immune function, and contribute to mineral deposit formation. When it is too base, the kidneys merely excrete the extra minerals, which is no problem (unless there is renal insufficiency.) This is one reason acidosis is much more common than alkylosis. The other reason is most people do not eat enough fruit and vegetables to compensate for all the grains and meats they consume.

The way to tell toward what one tends is to use nitrazine paper for a few mornings and see what the average pH is. It is usually used for urine, but will work with saliva, too. The ideal pH is around 6.0-6.5 for morning urine. Nitrazine is pH paper that gives an indication of the actual pH rather than litmus paper, which only tells greater or less than 7.0. It is expensive, and available at some pharmacies - call around.

If the urine is too acid, the easiest solution is to use a mineral supplement, especially at night. A product like Ecological Formula's Tri Salts, which is reagent quality calcium, magnesium, and potassium carbonates and bicarbonates, works faster than almost every type of supplement. However, it is not the ideal method. These types of mineral supplements are not well absorbed by the body and most of the minerals are immediately delivered to the bowel or kidneys for disposal, which does make an immediate difference in the pH of the urine, but since it was not absorbed into the bloodstream, it did not really do the body much good. These types of minerals may even be deleterious to the urinary tract since acid urine fights bacteria, yeast, and other pathogens not to mention the extra duty on the kidneys processing the minerals. It is better to use well-absorbed forms. Good products include Solaray Cal-Mag Citrate, a 1:1 ratio calcium magnesium type, Enzymatic Therapy Kreb's Cycle Chelates, Now Bone Strength, or Jarrow Mineral Balance, but most other chelated products are fine for this purpose. See the multimineral section for more information and detail on these types of products.

As far as adjusting the body pH up through dietary means, the best solution is to eat more fruits and vegetables and less grains and meats. The pH tendency of foods is not much based on their acid content or taste, but on the mineral content. For example, lemons make the body alkyline and most bread makes it acid. Tomatoes are problems for some people not as much for the acid or mineral content as the lectins. See Eat Right 4 Your Type

Phosphorous is contained in proteins and most grains. Proteins almost always also contain sulfur but little magnesium or calcium, so they are acid-forming foods. Some fish is less acid forming since it contains a decent amount of potassium (and maybe some calcium and magnesium) to balance out the acid minerals but most fish are quite acid forming. Most whole grains are not too bad since they have a little calcium and a decent amount of magnesium (in the hull) but refined flour, with the hull removed, is acid forming since most of the magnesium has been removed and there is nothing to balance all the phosphorous in the germ. (Even whole wheat products are best avoided in most cases, anyway, see Eat Right 4 Your Type, The Zone Diet, and Toxin Avoidance/Food.)

Some nuts have a decent ratio of calcium / magnesium to phosphorous / sulfur, but they are almost all acid-forming except for almonds, with their high calcium and good magnesium content. Dairy products have calcium and potassium to balance the phosphorous and sulfur, so are not that bad in the acid forming respect (but take magnesium with the calcium). Rice and soy milk don't have calcium or magnesium or quite enough potassium to balance all the phosphorous unless they are calcium enriched. Fruits and vegetables usually lack the acid minerals, and can have a good amount of potassium and sodium and a few are good sources of calcium, so are generally base-forming. High sulfur content vegetables like cabbage, onions, and garlic are less base-forming.

The best way to ensure a balance is to just eat two servings or more of fruit or vegetables for every serving of protein or grain, take a cal-mag supplement, and use a mineral-rich salt for insurance if needed.

pH balance is sometimes a concern for those fighting cancer with complementary therapies. Some practitioners recommend acidifying and some alkalizing the body to better fight the disease. As stated earlier, cells better respire when they are tending alkaline, and better oxygenation inhibits cancer. Then again, if there is an infection of the urinary tract providing bacteria and toxins which stimulate cancer, it may be better to use a acid therapy to keep this at bay.

More information on pH balancing is available in Herman Aihara's book called Acid and Alkaline, one of the enduring works on this topic. It is available in some health food stores and online.

Following are two charts which show alkalizing and acidifying foods and differ a bit. The second chart also lists neutral foods. There is a basic rule of thumb. Fresh fruits and vegetables are alkalizing, grains and meat are acidifying with a few exceptions.

Testing the pH of Saliva

Here's a post to the rife listserver by Duncan Crow which is a paraphrased reprint from The Body Electric:. It gives instructions on how to test saliva pH using a test kit made for aquariums. Nitrazine paper is more convenient, but more expensive.

The more concentrated hydrogen becomes in your body, the more acidic you become. The less concentrated the hydrogen is in your body, the more alkaline you become. The measure of hydrogen concentration called pH. On a standard pH chart, 7.0 is neutral. Anything below this is acidic to the human body and anything above it is alkaline to the human body. If yas need to read, check out Herman Iahara "Acid and Alkaline" and Dr. Robert Barefoot "The Calcium Factor".

Parasites (fungii, virii, bacteria, viruses, protozoas, amoebas and microscopic worms), especially candidas, as well as cancer cells can not live with a intracellular pH range between 7.2 and 7.4. Laboratory studies have already proved this simple truth especially those done in Germany. Most doctors check the blood pH, which should always be an alkaline 7.4, but doctors seldom if ever, check the extracellular pH through a saliva test you can do at home. Urine blood pH are not a reliable indicator of the intracellular pH, but a saliva pH reading will help one determine with a good degree of accuracy if a body is too acidic or too alkaline. When the pH drops into the acid range, the body will support many types of parasite as well as cancer. When it becomes too alkaline, over 7.5, it plays host to other parasites, especially certain types of bacteria. Too acidic and you are in a state of acidosis. Too alkaline and you are in a state of alkalosis. Alkalosis is rare, but acidosis is a major problem and the main underlying condition to all disease. The immune system greatly slows down in this environment, which is always seen in live cell blood exams, since your red blood and white blood cells are aerobic (oxygen feeders).

As we age, diet, water (quality and pH) as well as anything else we drink, either keeps our bodies alkaline or slowly makes them more acidic. Processed sugars and starches are the main offenders. Stripped of their natural enzymes and minerals during processing, these turn into pure acid when digested, unlike fruits and tropical fruits which start out acidic when eaten, but after polypeptide digestion, produce alkaline salts (electrolytes). Remember two-time Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling's "Every disease and every ailment is linked to a mineral deficiency"?

The main reason that we need a slightly alkaline system boils down to one of oxygen levels. Acidity is the immediate effect of reduced oxygen levels at the cellular level, and is caused by an alkalizing mineral shortage, toxins, including known carcinogens, and poor diet. In fact, another two-time Nobel Laureate, Otto Warburg, who was the only person to be awarded twice for medicine, stated that ANY substance that lowers cellular oxygen to dangerous levels is a carcinogen. Clearing toxins will raise oxygen levels, and raising oxygen levels will allow the system to clear more pollutants. And alkalinity allows your system to carry more oxygen and accomplish this mission.

Go to a pet store and get one of their freshwater pH test kits. The pH range will usually be from 6.0 to about 7.6. The kit comes with a glass vial and plastic cap, a dropper of bromothomial blue, enough to do 250 tests, and a pH color chart ranging from 6.0 to 7.6. First thing in the morning, before you even rinse your mouth and before you eat anything, pull out the glass vial and spit into it until you have filled the vial with enough saliva to reach the mark on the vial. If you are having trouble making enough saliva, you are dehydrated. This will also be your first clue that your body is very acidic. Add the three drops of bromothomial blue as instructed on most packages, into the saliva. Put the cap onto the glass vial and shake it up good. This usually only takes a few shakes. Compare the color of your saliva sample to the color chart. The ideal reading is 7.4. If you are in the blue, your extracellular and intracellular pH is alkaline. You are no doubt quite healthy unless you are too alkaline. If it is in the blue/green or yellow, you are below 7.0 (neutral) and are acidic (acidosis); 6.6 is courting cancer.

In order to regain (or maintain) your health you'll need to kill your parasites and neutralize their acidic by-products, work on your bowel cleanse, and remove most of the other accumulated toxins from your body. In addition to using a herbal blend against parasites you will adopt a more alkaline diet, use 5 grams of calcium, almost as much magnesium and up to 5,000 IU of vitamin D as well as zinc, copper, potassium and all the other alkalizing minerals. The alkalizing minerals will help enormously. Don't skip them. Coral calcium is an organic calcium that will give you pathogen die off symptoms like you've never experienced before if you are 6.6 or below. Organic calcium from milk is another excellent bioavailable product; Dr. Barefoot says it's the best calcium supplement on the market. Also, Microhydrin, developed by Dr. Patrick Flanagan, is a very powerful alkalizer.
