Why Should We Ground the Body to Earth?

The Importance of Our Environment and Our Essential Interaction and Interwoven Connection With It and Mother Earth

Why being directly connected to, and in symbiosis with Nature - especially the Earth - is inherently good for us, and why any form of disconnection, insulation from, or interference with this natural symbiosis may not be good for us.
Please note that this web page is currently under reconstruction!

["Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers." ARTICLE 19. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948, in Paris.]

The following information is taken from an article based upon the published science (in English) of eminent Biophysicists in 1993 by Haug International s.p.r.l. First published in German in 1990 by Karl F. Haug Verlag GmbH & Co.

'A Human in many respects is literally an “open system and constantly receives from his environment information from biotic and abiotic environmental factors. Plants, animals and people and their vital expressions and mutual relationships are among the biotic environmental factors. Soil, air, water, sunlight, sound, crystals, trace elements, Schumann waves and other electromagnetic oscillations of the atmosphere are natural abiotic factors. All these natural items of information are largely disturbed in our modern age by artificial environmental factors created by Man” - such as microwaves and radio waves, chemicals and so forth - which can “…lead to a modification of the natural environmental situation and environmental information and imperceptibly, but to an increasingly worsening extent, the human organism.'

'The science of biophysics has established that all life is firmly imprinted with the stamp of the environment: “The body is thus firmly integrated into our environment, is in constant exchange with it and is controlled by it, i.e. all our various biorhythms, our organ and metabolic functions (normally) run synchronously with the ‘pulse rhythm’ of the universe. If this coordination is disturbed, disease and possibly death occur.” Control pulses come firstly from what are referred to as Schumann waves, arising in the ionosphere with a frequency of 7.83Hz that corresponds precisely with the frequency of the hippocampus in the brain of all mammals. The hippocampus in humans is responsible for our memory and survival among other factors.

'Our nervous system also responds to the electromagnetic pulses of the Schumann waves. These induce miniature potentials in the nerve loops, which on repetition add up to action potentials and can actively intervene in cybernetic control circuits of the body. The autonomic nervous system is autonomic but adapted to the environment and resonates with it. It becomes very clear that we are an electrical or energy system and depend on and interact with balanced and natural energies around us for our health, wellbeing and survival. The importance of this and the importance of the Earth’s Schumann waves, as an example, are evidenced by the fact that NASA builds Schumann wave generators into its manned space flights to keep their astronauts physiologically and psychologically healthy.

"However, these Schumann waves can be interfered with or altered in towns and cities and even the countryside by technical interference frequencies from all forms of radio and other communication transmitters, railway networks and high-tension power lines et al. There is another signal spectrum that we humans integrate with and this is known as the electron plasma waves of trace elements and crystals in the lithosphere. Although these electromagnetic radiations are far weaker in intensity, they are in precise resonance with the organism, in which the same trace elements also occur, particularly in the blood. These too can be interfered with by communications transmitters.
“We have already shown how inextricably the human body is bound to Nature, both in relation to the Earth and the Cosmos. We are controlled by both and we can only live in common, rhythmical oscillations. Unfortunately the modern world is heavily polluted by microwaves, which have increased exponentially in recent years. The many new radio and TV broadcasting stations, the increase in CB radio, in radar for air traffic, satellites or military installations alone are flooding the aether, which has a knock-on effect on biological frequencies. If we consider that the body transfers biological information ranging from 1 Hz right through to well above light frequencies, we can see how this type of pollution, which can be classed as more harmful than exposure to pollutant substances, is certainly a major reason why acute disorders are relatively rare nowadays… This is clearly supported by the increase in chronic disorders in recent years.”' extracted from "Brief Synopsis of the Dangers of EMFs..."by Steve Gamble 1996

It is quite clear from the aforementioned information that our environment has played a large part in our evolution and survival, enabling us to become what we are today. That it continues to play a large part in the continuity of our species is also without question. (This of course applies to all living entities too). If our communication and interaction with nature and the environment is interfered with, then it is also clear that this interference will have a detrimental affect upon our biophysical functionality and corresponding physiology.

Does Our Modern Day Living Represent a Health Hazard?

Today the human body, more so than any other living entity, is gradually and increasingly being disconnected with, or insulated from, the Earth. This is a vital and important connection that we have had and have evolved with for many thousands of years. Today, due to our modern-day living, man-made fabrics and footwear, high rise offices and buildings, and a lot more, we seem to have lost this vitally important biological and biophysical connection essential for well-being. In view of the aforementioned information, and with the increasing plethora of human-created electrical, microwave and wireless radiation we are being subjected to today, is it prudent to ask if this disconnection from the Earth and a natural environment is actually doing us any good or not?

Is It Important To Have a Connection With Earth - To be Grounded?

Many people have noticed that they feel better when they spend time barefoot in the outdoors, walking barefoot on the seashore, feet in the edge of the lapping waters, or just laid upon the Earth.

The known effect of grounding - or being grounded - is that it discharges and prevents the build up of electrical stress. This knowledge has been employed in the Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) business for many years in the UK as a form of safety and one of reducing (grounding) voltage (Static Electricity) levels in the human body to protect both humans and sensitive electronic equipment.

However, our modern lifestyle prohibits most people from spending time in direct contact with the earth. We have evolved in direct contact with the earth, walking barefoot, sleeping on the earth and using natural footwear that kept us 'earthed' and 'grounded'. Today we wear footwear with rubber-molded soles that insulate us from contact with the Earth. We sleep upstairs, away from connection with the earth. In the mid-1900s in the UK we switched our electricity supply from Direct Current (DC) to Alternating Current (AC), and with this change came the Electric and Electromagnetic fields that can affect us so much today. Additionally, with the plethora of mobile phone masts and all things wireless, we are being bombarded with electrical radiation from all quarters which can lead to a build up of electrical stress. Is it any wonder that more and more people are becoming electro-sensitive (ES) - a known and recognised medical condition in Sweden - and that chronic conditions are on the rise?

Therefore, it follows that in today's electrically-polluted world it is prudent to allow our body the opportunity to be able to discharge as much of this unnatural and excessive electrical stress as it can, as often as it can. For our body to do this it needs to be connected with nature, with the earth.

Having a direct conductive connection with the Earth allows us to experience and enjoy that connection with Nature and the Earth's essential energy field that we once enjoyed as a matter of course, without interference, for thousands of years. When the body is grounded to earth it ceases to act just as an antennae, it then becomes a conductor as well. Thus it is able to discharge excessive and unrequired voltage (static & information) from the body. This is after all the premise upon which ESD to ground products work. In today’s electrically-polluted world, re-connecting with the earth as often as possible - like in the old days - could well prove to be one of the most important decisions that we ever take!

Reconnecting to the Earth can be achieved in a number of ways. One, naturally by going barefoot as often as possible or swimming in the sea. Two, wear leather-soled footwear or ESD Grounding shoes. Three, use a Car Grounding Pad and/or a Vehicle Grounding Strip on your car that connects the 'Faraday Cage' of the metallic car with the surface/ground below to earth/discharge the electrostatic charge. Four, by using what is referred to as a 'Barefoot Substitute' - a conductive material that 'connects' the body to ground, to the earth. This particular way of re-connection with the earth and nature can be through connecting an external Ground Rod to any suitable conductive material, or through connecting conductive material to a dedicated Mains Earth Connection Kit, as outlined above.

Welcome to the new frontier of Earthing.

By Gaetan Chevalier, Ph.D., Director, Earthing Institute

As director of the Earthing Institute I look forward to the many exciting discoveries ahead related to the simple proposition that good things happen inside our bodies when we connect to the Earth beneath our feet.

As a researcher involved primarily with the body’s electrophysiology (how the body produces and utilizes electrical energy), I find it rather amazing that at this point in the human timeline we are just starting to scientifically explore the benefits to health that come from direct contact with the planet we live on. It is obvious that past cultures, and even indigenous people today, put great emphasis on connectedness to the Earth. Finally, we are investigating the precise dynamics and benefits of this connectedness.

The studies I have been involved with have yielded an intriguing glimpse at what appears to be a new, more vital and robust human physiology. The body’s inner workings are different when we connect to the Earth either by being barefoot outside or sleeping on the Earth as was the case throughout most of evolution until only very recently, or through the utilization of practical Earthing products indoors that allow us to sleep, relax, and work grounded. The impact on our body, these initial studies strongly suggest, is a powerful and positive shift in the physiology that may one day give rise to a new definition of what is normal.

Earthing restores a lost electrical signal to the body that seems to stabilize the complicated circuitry of our essentially electrical body. My research shows that this has head to toe repercussions and many benefits for the hardware and software of our built-in self-regulating and self-healing mechanisms. For many people the shift is practically equivalent to charging a failing battery or restoring power after constant brownouts.

Those of us involved in Earthing research hypothesize that Earthing transfers negatively charged electrons into the body that are abundantly present on the surface of the Earth. Electrons are the “object of affection,” so to speak, of positively charged free radicals, the biochemical agents causing oxidation in the body. Electrons are the source of the power of antioxidants. The influx of electrons from Earthing neutralizes or otherwise satisfies and quenches free radicals, stopping them from stealing electrons from healthy tissue that results in tissue damage and chronic inflammation at the heart of so many common and serious diseases. Here, seemingly, is a natural, profound, and simple remedy for chronic inflammation: connect to the Earth.

Modern living has increasingly separated humans from Mother Earth and its great natural commodity of unlimited, subtle health-nurturing energy. This energy has now been discovered scientifically and with that discovery the magnificent prospect of doing great good for the entire population of our planet.

We welcome your comments, questions, and feedback.

EARTHING AND HEALTH

Please note that none of the statements made here constitute medical advice in any way or any claim for cure or treatment of any medical condition. Always consult with your personal physician regarding any personal health care issues.

Q: How does Earthing affect the body’s ability to heal?
A: The simplest explanation is that aches and pains and other disturbances in our bodies are often caused by inflammation. Electrons from the Earth have natural anti-inflammatory effects and are conducted relatively fast throughout the body, which is a good conductor. One of the most profound discoveries in modern biomedicine is that many of the chronic and debilitating diseases of our time have the same cause: chronic inflammation. Scientists now realize that many of our aches and pains arise from small regions in the body where an inflammatory response has taken place, but the inflammation has not completely stopped after the healing process. A low level of chronic inflammation can continue for years, damaging normal tissues and wasting energy. Many scientists believe that the human immune system evolved over a long span of time during which we were in virtually constant barefoot contact with the Earth. We believe that the immune system began functioning less efficiently as humans increasingly separated themselves from the Earth. One recent example is the advent of shoes with insulating soles about 50 years ago. Chronic disease, inflammation, and insomnia have skyrocketed ever since and the loss of connection with the Earth may be one totally overlooked cause.

Q: In your clinical studies, the physiological effects of Earthing have been almost immediate. Can you explain this?
A: The body is a good conductor of free electrons. It is a repeated observation that Earthing produces beneficial effects very rapidly. When people are grounded through the feet (either by standing barefoot on the Earth or via grounded EKG patches in experiments), they sometimes feel a tingling sensation moving up the legs. We associate this with the apparent movement of electrons up into the body. In our research, we have “clocked” the speed of this activity. We figure it takes about 20 to 30 minutes to reach sites of pain and inflammation and then begin neutralizing the inflammation. When a study participant says that pain has started to ease we regard this as a sign that the electrons have arrived at the pain site and have started to “go to work.”

Electrons may even be attracted to those sites because of they have a negative charge and free radicals, involved in the inflammatory process, have a positive charge. Once the free radicals are neutralized, we hypothesize that they stop their destructive actions on healthy tissues, leading to an abatement of pain, sometimes quite fast.

We also think that as soon as a person comes in direct contact with the Earth the electrons inside the body “feel” the effect of the ground potential through the Earth’s electric field. We discuss this—the so-called “straw-bead” effect—in Appendix B of our “Earthing” book. The body settles and equalizes electrically to the ground potential almost instantaneously. The information that a new potential has been established in the body is transmitted, also almost instantaneously, to the autonomic nervous system which then responds by “adjusting” electrical activities throughout the body. Muscle tension and skin conductance, and maybe also brain waves, are adjusted in a few seconds at the most.

Q: Earthing can improve quality of life, but what about aging? If stress causes premature aging, do you think we can add years to our lives by reconnecting with the Earth?
A: We don't know the answer to that question, however Earthing looks promising as a powerful anti-aging strategy. Many researchers have documented the deterioration of the immune system as we age. The name for this is immunosenescence. A prominent medical theory states that one of the causes of general deterioration during aging is free radical damage, technically known as oxidative stress, and resulting in injury to cells. Since Earthing greatly reduces oxidative stress it is expected to increase life expectancy and improve health. There is no question that maintaining a functionally “young” immune system is an excellent strategy for preserving the quality of life and slowing senescence.

Q: How many minutes or hours a day do I need to be grounded in order to feel results?
A: When you come in direct contact with the Earth there is an immediate and natural shift in your body. We have measured these in the laboratory and the changes point to the body functioning better. People with pain often feel relief in varying degrees—from a little to a lot, and to even disappearance of the pain—just by planting their bare feet on the ground outside for a half hour or so twice a day. Sleeping grounded through the night produces many beneficial results, such as better and deeper sleep, more energy during the day, and less pain. Again, the degree of benefits run from slight to dramatic, from immediate to gradual. Some chronically ill people benefit from additional grounding hours during the day, such as by being barefoot or using an Earthing mat or body band. From the thousands of cases that Clint Ober and others have observed over the past decade, the more severe the health problem the more dramatic the improvement seen with grounding in general, unless someone is dying. Even in end-of-life cases associated with pain, it has been reported that the dying person is generally in less pain.

Q: How long does it take to relieve my symptoms?
A: Everybody is different and symptoms are different with different causes. Earthing does not cure anything. Contact with the Earth helps restores the body’s natural electrical balance and reduce stress and inflammation. By doing these things, Earthing can have both short-term and long-term effects, and sometimes quite dramatic and quick. We have had many reports of improved sleep and decreased stress after only one or two nights of sleeping grounded. If the cause of sleep difficulties is long-term insomnia with underlying health issues, improvement often takes more time.

Medical thermal imaging has shown decreased inflammation in minutes. In a study conducted by the California Institute for Human Science instantaneous changes in brain waves and muscle tension were documented when the Earth connection was introduced.

Clearly, lasting changes in stress, sleep, pain and body rhythms occur when we are connected to the Earth for longer segments of time on a repeated basis. Nighttime sleep, when the body is most receptive to healing, is the most beneficial time.

In a general sense, just as you can’t direct healthy food, air, or water to create specific desired results in one function or part of your body, the body takes in the natural energy of the Earth and uses it as needed. You may experience benefits for certain issues you were not even expecting improvements in and there may be no change in other areas. Generally, the longer you use Earthing, the more benefits and vitality that become apparent.

Q: I feel better when I sleep grounded. What happens if I stop sleeping grounded?
A: We have heard from many people over the years who experienced relief and improvements and then stopped Earthing. Their gains began eroding. We advise people to make Earthing part of a healthy lifestyle routine and keep grounding themselves. Don’t stop. We all evolved connected to the Earth. Staying connected may be the difference between feeling good and feeling bad. Earthing is not just for regaining well-being, but also for maintaining it.

Q: I just started sleeping grounded and feel a bit strange. What could that be from?
A: Initially, some people may feel some temporary discomfort or even flu-like signs, pain or achiness. In practically all cases, this experience is fleeting. This effect stems from a normalization of the body’s “electrical system.” As that process gets underway, the body’s ability to release accumulated toxicity may improve and you could feel that as transient discomfort. Typically, after some initial adjustment, those individuals start feeling better and more energized. The feeling might last a few days at the most but it will go away. If you are uncomfortable, stop using the device for several days and then begin again. In the majority of cases, no discomfort is felt at the beginning.

Q: Are there people who sleep grounded and don’t feel anything, or for whom grounding doesn’t work?
A: Everybody benefits in some way, but we are all different. The benefits can come quickly and dramatically, such as less pain and better sleep, or subtly and gradually over time. Often people who are very ill feel the difference more dramatically. Someone with radiant health and who sleeps well may not feel any difference, however, connecting to the Earth is helping to preserve and perpetuate the precious commodity of good health. We regard Earthing as a natural form of anti-aging medicine, whether you feel it or not.

Q: I purchased a bed sheet and noticed tingling in my feet for the first few nights. Should I be concerned?
A: Many people feel tingling in the beginning. It’s a sign that the circulation is improving.

Q: I’ve got pain. How can this help me?
A: Go outside and stand, sit, or walk on the ground barefoot for at least a half hour or so. In that time you may notice that your pain is less. We believe this effect comes from the electrons that flow into your body from the Earth. Inside the body they act to reduce inflammation. There are also “barefoot substitutes,” Earthing products you can sleep on, work on, and sit on inside your home or place of work. Think of them as extension cords connecting you in your house or office to the Earth outside.

Q: Do the products need to go where my pain is?
A: Because our bodies are highly conductive, if any part of your body is in contact with the earth, or an Earthing device, all of your body is grounded. However, we have noticed that having the Earth connection near the location of an injury or pain may speed the decrease in inflammation that causes pain.

Q: I have two stents. Could sleeping grounded do any damage to the stents?
A: Not any more than sleeping or walking barefoot on the Earth would cause damage. Earthing devices simply deliver the subtle energy of the Earth inside to where you live and work. The energy helps restore the natural electrical balance in your body.

Q: Can Earthing products be used by somebody who has a pacemaker?
A: There is no evidence that Earthing interferes with the function of a pacemaker. Earthing is the same as walking barefoot on the Earth. Many people with pacemakers sleep grounded and experience the benefits of their medical device and Earthing. To our knowledge, no one with a pacemaker was advised not to walk barefoot outdoors. Just check with your doctor initially and monitor yourself for any symptoms.

Q: Can you use the Earthing products if you have knee and hip replacements?
A: No problem.

Q: I live in a warm climate where we are reluctant to go out barefoot due to parasites in the soil like hookworm and roundworm). The soil never gets cold enough for the parasites to die off.
A: If being barefoot outside is risky, use the Earthing products inside. The best opportunity to gain the many benefits of Earthing is to sleep grounded.

Q: Can I get too much of the Earth’s energy by sleeping grounded every night?
A: Throughout most of history we walked barefoot and slept on the ground. We were directly connected to the Earth almost 24/7. That’s what our bodies are used to. The combination of insulative shoes and elevated beds has separated us from the natural electric frequencies of the Earth. We believe this separation has contributed to the great increase in chronic diseases and inflammation.

Our body knows exactly what to do with what the Earth provides for us. When we connect to the Earth the amount of the electrons we absorb is driven by the amount our body needs to balance the electrical charge of our body. It is always the perfect amount.
