Be enlighted - NOT just sit and wait!

THE DEFINING EVENT

JUNE 10, 2008. This is another backgrounder for my upcoming tele-seminar, IMAGINATION AND ENLIGHTENMENT, on June 17. To sign up, just click on the link above.

When people believe they’ll attain heaven or enlightenment or absolute oneness, they also tend to believe in a defining event. In other words, something will happen to them, and THEN they’ll find themselves in the ultimate reality, whatever that is.

This defining event draws lots of attention from the masses. It takes different forms. There will be: an apocalypse sent by God; a war to end all wars; a visitation by space aliens; a massive stoppage in the “calendar”; a golden revelation spread out over the sky…

Many people look and wait and interpret signs and hope, because they want that defining event to take place. As soon as possible.

Prophecy is quite popular, because it usually includes a description of the defining event and a few clues about when it’s going to happen.

The defining event is popular for another reason: it promises to spell the end of the old stifling reality, the one people feel caught up in. All problems and all boredom and all failure will go away.

As I say, most believers in a defining event just hang around and look to the skies and hope. This is a perfect situation for passivity. “Nothing happening right now, but soon that’ll all change. You’ll see.”

In this state of mind, the imagination and the creative impulse are put on hold. What use is it to imagine and create, when the really Big One is coming in from the outside as a result of a “much greater force?”

In truth, there are many, many defining events, when a person is creating and inventing at full bore. These events don’t relieve the need to create, however. They don’t “end everything.” They begin everything, over and over and over.

In their conditioned state of mind, this is too much for most people to comprehend. They are tuned to the notion that the “existence-changing moment” must appear from Beyond. They see NO POSSIBLE CONNECTION BETWEEN CREATING AND ENLIGHTENMENT. They see the likelihood of this on a par with a dog dancing on his nose on the moon.

And therefore, they unconsciously construct a mass Consensus in which enlightenment, by any definition, always shows up out of the blue.

This Consensus gives rise to the culture of planet Earth.
